Frequently Asked Questions.
Find answers to common questions about weight management and how it can benefit you.
Yes. At CMS, you will be treated by a multidisciplinary team of medical and allied health practitioners regulated by the Australian health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA). This includes medical practitioners, accredited practising dietitian, clinical psychologists and exercise physiologists.
We do not use health coaches or other non-AHPRA-registered practitioners because we believe in delivering the highest quality of clinical care for our clients. Hundreds of clients have been safely and effectively treated at our clinic, benefiting from our comprehensive and expert approach.
Your assessment at Cardio Metabolic Services is a comprehensive clinical evaluation of your health. It provides the foundation for a personalised, evidence-based treatment plan that supports your health in a sustainable way. We have designed your assessment to enable us to understand the factors influencing your weight, health, and wellbeing. Each client is different, so we take the time to explore your unique biology, lifestyle, and health history before making recommendations on personalised treatment.
We provide long initial appointments (up to 60 minutes) to give you the time and space to discuss your health and weight loss goals in a supportive, non-judgmental and stigma-free environment.
What to Expect:
A friendly conversation
We want to learn more about your health concerns and health goals. We will explore how long you have lived with obesity, how your weight affects your life, and have a discussion about the fundamental pillars of health—nutrition, physical activity, mental wellbeing and sleep.
Body composition assessment
We use bio-impedance analysis to provide an accurate assessment of your fat mass and muscle mass. This helps guide treatment decisions to promote healthy weight loss that targets reductions in fat mass whilst preserving muscle and bone mass.
Cardiometabolic, nutritional and hormonal screening
We arrange several blood and urine tests to assess biomarkers relating to your cardio-metabolic health and nutrition status, and review other key health markers relevant to weight and health. This includes screening for testosterone deficiency in men and menopause in women. We advise on further tests that may be appropriate according to your needs. This includes wearables such as a continuous glucose monitor, pharmacogenomic testing, and screening for specific health conditions, such as coeliac disease, fatty liver disease, nutritional deficiencies and diabetes.
Specialist investigations
We will organise specialist investigations when indicated. For example, calcium scoring and cardiac stress testing for cardiovascular disease, liver ultrasound and FibroScan for fatty liver disease, and overnight sleep studies for obstructive sleep apnoea.
Mental health and eating-behaviour screening
We explore factors such as mood, stress, sleep and eating patterns in a respectful and supportive way, recognising the important role they play in appetite regulation and health. For clients living with mental illness, disordered eating or eating disorders, we can initiate tailored treatment through our mental health team or refer to specialist eating disorder services in Perth.
CMS offers in-person consultations. Phone appointments can be offered for follow-up consultations where appropriate and for convenience to you.
Effective weight loss treatment recognises that sustainable weight loss is not simply a matter of willpower and motivation. We shift the focus from individual responsibility to shared care, following a medical model that aims to give durable weight loss and improved health outcomes.
Understanding weight regain
Traditional calorie-focused approaches to dieting may lead to short-term weight loss. However, the body adapts by:
- Slowing metabolic rate
- Increasing hunger and appetite signals
A personalised, medical approach
The treatment we recommend is always tailored to your health, goals and preferences. We do not rely on:
- Extreme dietary restriction
- Unsustainable exercise plans
- Willpower-based strategies
- Giving every person the same weight loss medication
Foundations of treatment
We provide support for behaviour change across key pillars of health:
- Nutrition
- Physical activity
- Sleep
- Mental wellbeing
Management of obesity-related chronic disease
Obesity is closely linked with chronic conditions such as:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance
- Fatty liver disease (MASLD)
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Insulin resistance
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
Our medical practitioners will diagnose and treat all medical conditions alongside your weight loss treatment.
Our goal
- Clinically meaningful and sustainable weight loss
- Improved metabolic and cardiovascular health
- Reduced risk and progression of obesity-related disease
- A compassionate, stigma-free treatment experience focused on long-term wellbeing

Prescription medications for weight loss may be considered for certain eligible clients as part of a doctor-supervised medical weight loss treatment plan. Not every client is eligible for prescription weight loss medication and some clients may benefit from other treatments. This is why every client receives a comprehensive clinical assessment to ensure the right treatment is provided.
Our skilled team will advise on treatments that are appropriate for you with a focus on improving health, not just weight loss. We support all aspects of your health, including nutrition, exercise, sleep, and wellbeing.
Before recommending any treatment, we conduct a comprehensive assessment of your health to ensure the treatment we recommend is appropriate and safe.
No! For decades, healthcare providers and public health programs have focused on eating less and exercising more to achieve weight loss. Whilst this may work in the short term, the body adapts which causes many individuals to regain weight over time. This creates a frustrating cycle of weight loss and weight regain, leaving many feeling hopelessthrough no fault of their own.
We understand obesity as a chronic disease. Our practitioners are skilled and experienced in managing obesity in addition to the full spectrum of chronic diseases associated with obesity, including diabetes, chronic kidney disease, fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disease.
Personalised treatment is the key to lasting weight loss and this is central to our approach. We do no expect you to rely on willpower, extreme motivation, or restrictive eating to lose weight.
Instead, we focus on providing treatments that promote healthy, sustainable weight loss that brings meaningful results.
Yes. We are AHPRA-registered medical and allied health practitioners and are able to diagnose and treat medical and surgical conditions related to obesity.
Weight management is not just about losing weight, it’s about improving health.
Many of our clients benefit from the treatment of co-existing health conditions alongside weight management.
Our practitioners are appropriately experienced and skilled in managing a wide range of medical and psychiatric conditions including diabetes, metabolic disease, kidney and liver disease, and mental health conditions including depression, anxiety and eating disorders.
Whilst Telehealth-only providers offer a convenient service to access weight loss medication, obesity is a complex and serious medical condition which requires a comprehensive assessment and clinical examination.
We believe any practitioner providing medical weight loss treatment must also be experienced in the management of chronic diseases and mental health conditions associated with obesity, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, mental health conditions, menopause/peri-menopause, male hypogonadism, and sleep disorders.
We choose to provide only high quality and comprehensive care in clinic for all clients for initial consultations to enable us to gather a complete picture of your health. For follow-up consultations, telemedicine appointments are available where appropriate for your convenience.
We work alongside you to improve the health and wellbeing of your patient with a focus on weight management to improve health.
We undertake a comprehensive assessment for conditions associated with excess adiposity including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, liver and kidney disease.
Our goal is to support your patient to improve physical and mental health. This results in reduced anaesthetic risk, better post-operative recovery, and better outcomes for those living with chronic diseases.
